How San Diego's trash collection schedule works

The City of San Diego Environmental Services Department manages curbside collection for single-family homes. Trash, recycling, and organics are all collected weekly in most neighborhoods.

Your specific pickup day depends on your address. The fastest way to find it is to enter your address on the City of San Diego Environmental Services website. It'll show your trash day, recycling day, and organics collection day.

What goes in each bin in San Diego?

Three bins, three purposes:

Black bin - regular trash. Anything that doesn't belong in the other two.

Blue bin - recyclables. Clean paper, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and containers, metal cans. No food residue, no plastic bags, no shredded paper.

Green bin - organic waste. This is the new one. Under California's SB 1383 mandate, green bins now take food scraps (meat, bones, dairy, fruit, vegetable trimmings), food-soiled paper (pizza boxes, paper napkins, coffee filters), and yard trimmings (grass clippings, leaves, small branches).

Contaminating the green bin with regular trash can result in a rejected pickup. The driver leaves the bin full and documents the contamination.

What happens when items don't fit in the bin?

The city won't pick up anything that doesn't fit inside the bin with the lid completely closed. If you have bulk items - broken furniture, extra yard waste, construction debris from a remodel - they don't go on the curb with the regular trash.

Schedule a bulky item pickup through the city. San Diego residents get a limited number of free bulky item pickups per year.
