What Items Can't Junk Seekers Take in San Diego?

Most things we take. But not everything. San Diego has specific regulations around hazardous materials and certain waste types - and putting them in a standard junk removal load creates legal and environmental problems.

    Key Takeaways

    • Hazardous materials - paint, chemicals, motor oil, propane tanks, batteries - cannot go in a standard junk removal load in San Diego County
    • Appliances containing Freon like refrigerators and AC units require certified extraction before disposal - Junk Seekers handles this as part of the job
    • San Diego County runs Household Hazardous Waste drop-off events for items we can't take - call 1-800-CLEANUP or visit the county website to find the nearest location

Most things we take. But not everything. San Diego has specific regulations around hazardous materials and certain waste types - and putting them in a standard junk removal load creates legal and environmental problems.

Here's what Junk Seekers can't haul and what to do with those items instead.

    What can't Junk Seekers take?

A few categories of items can't go in a standard junk removal load anywhere in San Diego County:

Hazardous household waste. Paint - latex or oil-based, full or partially full cans. Household chemicals - cleaning products, pesticides, pool chemicals, fertilizers. Motor oil and automotive fluids. Propane tanks - full or empty. Batteries - car batteries, lithium batteries, rechargeable batteries. Fluorescent light bulbs and tubes. Medications and medical waste.

These items are regulated under California and federal environmental law. They require specific handling and designated disposal facilities - they can't go in a truck with general junk.

Asbestos-containing materials. Older homes in San Diego County - particularly those built before 1980 - may contain asbestos in insulation, floor tiles, ceiling tiles, or pipe wrap. Asbestos removal and disposal is a licensed specialty process. Junk Seekers does not handle asbestos-containing materials.

Biohazard waste. Blood, bodily fluids, needles, and medical waste require licensed biohazard remediation. This is not standard junk removal.

Tires. Most junk removal companies in San Diego do not accept tires. Auto shops and tire retailers typically accept old tires for recycling - call ahead to confirm.

What about appliances - can Junk Seekers take those?

Yes - with one important clarification. Appliances that contain refrigerants - refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning units, dehumidifiers - require certified Freon extraction before disposal. This is a legal requirement under federal and California law.

Junk Seekers handles certified Freon extraction as part of the appliance removal job. You don't need to arrange that separately - it's included in the estimate. So yes, we take refrigerators and AC units - we just handle them correctly.

Washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, and microwaves don't have the refrigerant issue and are taken without any special process.

What do you do with items Junk Seekers can't take?

San Diego County runs Household Hazardous Waste collection events across the region throughout the year. These are free drop-off events for residents to safely dispose of paint, chemicals, batteries, motor oil, and similar materials.

To find the nearest HHW drop-off location or event: call 1-800-CLEANUP or visit the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health website.

For asbestos - you'll need a licensed abatement contractor. San Diego County's Department of Environmental Health has a list of licensed contractors.

For tires - most auto shops and tire retailers accept old tires. Call ahead to confirm they'll take yours.

Not sure if we can take something?

Call (619) 916-8419 before the job. If you describe what you have, we'll tell you whether it can go in the load or needs to be handled separately. We'd rather sort it out before we arrive than show up and have to leave items behind.
